NRIs are eligible for AADHAAR Card registration regardless of their resident country. Earlier residency rules restriction of staying physically in India for 182 days in last 12 months before applying for new AADHAAR Card is now removed for NRIs and they can apply for new AADHAAR Card on arrival, without any delays. How to Apply for AADHAAR Card for NRI
To apply for a new AADHAAR Card enrolment registration, NRI applicant must visit a nearby AADHAAR Card enrolment centre with the required supporting documents. At the AADHAAR Card enrolment centre, each NRI applicant has to fill a separate AADHAAR Card enrolment form with requested details. In the AADHAAR Card enrolment form, the NRI applicant can only write his / her local Indian mobile phone number. Although international / non-Indian mobile numbers are allowed, UIDAI will not send SMS/text messages on an international number. Hence it is highly recommended to provide an Indian mobile number since OTP is required for many of the services in India where AADHAAR Card is required. The NRI applicant who has a local Indian address, he/she can use NRI AADHAAR Card application form 1 or 3 or 5 based on the applicant age. For an adult NRI applicant above age 18, who has a local Indian address, use AADHAAR Card application Form 1. If the applicant has an international / non-Indian address, NRI AADHAAR Card application form 2 or 4 or 6 can be used based on the applicant age. For an adult NRI applicant above age 18, who has an international / non-Indian address, use AADHAAR Card application Form 2. Once the filled up form and the supporting documents are in order, each NRI applicant's biometric (iris scan, fingerprints scan and photograph) and demographic data will be captured electronically and sent to the central data processing servers.
Earlier, after arriving in India, NRIs had to wait for 182 days so that their status changed from Non-Resident Indian (NRI) to resident and only then they could apply for AADHAAR Card enrolment. However in May 2020, the Finance Minister of India proposed that NRIs with valid Indian Passport may apply for AADHAAR Card on arrival and need not wait for 182 days for their status to change to resident. NRI applicant must hold a valid Indian Passport as Proof of Identity document to apply for AADHAAR Card. For NRIs, Email ID is mandatory in the AADHAAR Card enrolment form. At the AADHAAR Card enrolment registration centre, the NRI applicant must specifically ask the AADHAAR Card enrolment operator to enrol him/her as an NRI.
How to Apply Baal AADHAAR Card for NRI Kids below age 5
NRI kids below age 5 are eligible to get a blue colored AADHAAR Card, called Baal AADHAAR. The child has to visit a nearby AADHAAR Card enrolment centre in India, accompanied by father / mother / guardian, with the required supporting documents. For every NRI applicant, including NRI kids below 5 years of age, a valid Indian Passport is necessary as Proof of Identity, Proof of Address as well as Proof of Relationship document, to establish the relationship with the accompanying father / mother / guardian. The accompanying father / mother / guardian have to submit their own AADHAAR Card or EID number, if the NRI child below age 5 is introduced to AADHAAR Card by them. The accompanying father / mother / guardian has to authenticate on behalf of the NRI child and also give consent for enrolment of the minor child by signing the enrolment form. For an NRI child applicant below age 5, who has a local Indian address, use AADHAAR Card application Form 5. For an NRI child applicant below age 5, who has an international / non-Indian address, use AADHAAR Card application Form 6. Also submit the Proof of Date of Birth document of the NRI child if available. At the AADHAAR Card enrolment centre, fill separate AADHAAR Card enrolment forms with requested details for each applicant NRI kids below age 5. Once the filled up form and the supporting documents are in order, each NRI child applicant's facial photograph and demographic data will be captured electronically and sent to the central data processing servers. For kids below 5 years age, iris scan and fingerprints scan are not captured, only facial photograph is taken. These NRI children will need to update their biometrics of iris scan, fingerprints scan and facial photograph, when they turn 5 and 15. Intimation to this effect will be mentioned in the original AADHAAR Card letter.
How to Apply AADHAAR for a NRI Minor Kids between age 5 and 18
NRI minor child between age 5 and 18 who wishes to enroll in a new AADHAAR Card, has to visit a nearby AADHAAR Card enrolment centre in India, accompanied by father / mother / guardian, with the required supporting documents. For every NRI applicant, including NRI minor kids between age 5 and 18 years of age, a valid Indian Passport is necessary as Proof of Identity, Proof of Address as well as Proof of Relationship document, to establish the relationship with the accompanying father / mother / guardian. The accompanying father / mother / guardian have to submit their own AADHAAR Card or EID number, if the NRI minor child is introduced to AADHAAR Card by them. AADHAAR Card Enrolment Acknowledgement Slip for NRI
At the end of the enrolment process, each NRI applicant will be given an acknowledgement slip containing a unique Enrolment ID and Date & Time Stamp. Keep this AADHAAR Card enrolment acknowledgement slip securely as it will be required to check AADHAAR Card enrolment status, download e-AADHAAR Card online. Verify the data in the AADHAAR Card enrolment acknowledgement slip carefully to make sure all the data are captured correctly. If there are any mistakes, correction in the AADHAAR Card enrolment data can be done immediately if the applicant acts promptly and notifies the operator of any error, when the applicant is still at the AADHAAR Card centre. Once the applicant have left the AADHAAR Card centre, he/she will then have to wait for the AADHAAR Card to get generated and then apply for AADHAAR Card correction / update request.
Individuals, including NRIs, can apply for AADHAAR Card enrolment registration only once, any attempt to enrol multiple times will be rejected by the process of de-duplication using their demographic and biometric information. AADHAAR Card approval process may take around 180 days after successful enrolment registration. Once it's ready, AADHAAR Card will be delivered by the India Post on the address mentioned in their AADHAAR Card enrolment registration form. For delivery of AADHAR Card to a foreign address mentioned in their AADHAAR Card enrolment registration form, a additional fees will be charged, which will be updated on the UIDAI website from time to time. An e-AADHAAR Card will also be delivered to the email address mentioned in their AADHAAR Card enrolment registration form.
AADHAAR Card Enrolment Documents for NRI
Each NRI applicant must carry the supporting documents for new AADHAAR Card application in original; no Xerox copies of the documents are required. A valid Indian Passport is needed as Proof of Identity and Proof of Address document to apply for new AADHAAR Card enrolment registration. If the NRI applicant's passport has recorded an address outside India, they have to apply for AADHAAR with the foreign address using form number 2 or 4 or 6 based on the applicant age.
How to Apply for AADHAAR Card for NRI without Indian Passport
NRI (Non resident Indian) is an Indian citizen who is staying outside India for more than 182 days for study, work, business or other personal reasons. The applicant can not be an NRI if he/she is not a citizen of India and do not hold an Indian passport even if he/she is living outside India. If the applicant was an Indian citizen before and have now given up the his/her citizen to become a citizen of a foreign country and are holding a passport of that country, the applicant is most likely an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India).
