Procedure to change / correct name in AADHAAR Card is made quick, hassle free and user friendly by UIDAI. Name change is a very rarely requested update in AADHAAR Card only when there is either some minor mistake in the name on AADHAAR Card or when there is a change in name due to life events such as marriage / divorce. Applicant can request change / correction of name online on UIDAI's Self Service Update Portal without having to physically go to AADHAAR Card enrolment / update centre. Online, applicant can request name change / correction in AADHAAR Card only twice in his/her life time. If name change / correction is needed more than twice, the applicant will have to physically go to AADHAAR Card enrolment / update centre with supporting Proof of Identity document. Applicant will be required to upload colored scanned copy of the original Proof of Identity document as per the valid documents list. A valid working mobile number must be linked to AADHAAR Card to change / correct name in AADHAAR Card online. If the applicant did not mention his/her mobile number at the time of AADHAAR Card enrolment or did not link it later at AADHAAR Card enrolment / update centre, he/she needs to link it now at the AADHAAR Card centre to proceed.
Only following minor changes for name in AADHAAR Card are allowed online:
- Spelling corrections in name, e.g. Sanjiv to Sanjeev.
- Sequence change (example: Mohan Pankaj Patel to Pankaj Mohan Patel)
- Inclusion of space between name parts (example: Pankajmohan Patel to Pankaj Mohan Patel)
- Short form to full form (example: PM Patel to Pankaj Mohan Patel)
- Change of surname after marriage (example: Priya Pankaj Nair to Priya Mohan Patel)
Applicant can also request change / correction of name offline by visiting a nearby AADHAAR Card enrolment / update centre with the original supporting Proof of Identity document along with the AADHAAR Card and authenticate using his/her biometrics.
Applicant will be charged ₹75 to change / correct name in AADHAAR Card. This name change processing fees is non-refundable.
If there are any mistakes in the name when applying for a new AADHAAR Card, correction can be done immediately if the applicant acts promptly and notifies the operator of any error, when the applicant is still at the AADHAAR Card centre. Once the applicant has left the AADHAAR Card centre, he/she will then have to wait for the AADHAAR Card to get generated and then apply for AADHAAR Card name correction / update request.

How to change / update / correct name in AADHAAR Card online

- Click on the "Login" button in the myAadhaar welcome screen.
- Enter the applicant's 12 digit "AADHAAR Card Number".
- Enter the Captcha Verification code exactly as is shown in the auto-generated image on the screen. If the auto-generated Captcha Verification code is not readable, press the refresh icon to generate a new Captcha Verification code.
- Click on the "Send OTP" button; this will send an OTP (One Time Password) to the applicant's registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number and click on the "Login" button.
- Upon successful login, "Services" page is shown with available online AADHAAR Card services. Click on the "Download Aadhaar" service button.
- On the "How it Works?" page, carefully read the instructions on what information can be updated online in AADHAAR Card and how to update them and click on the "Proceed To Update Aadhaar" button.

Click and select "Name" option from the available data field(s) that can be updated in AADHAAR Card online and click on the "Proceed To Update Aadhaar" button.
- Once supporting Proof of Identity document for name update is uploaded successfully, confirm the entered name change details in the Preview screen and proceed to make name change processing fees payment.
- Upon successful online name change request submission, a URN (Update Request Number) (such as "1234/12345/12345") will be displayed on the screen and also sent via SMS to the applicant's registered mobile number. Save this URN (Update Request Number) securely as it will be required to check AADHAAR Card update status online.
